SENDEN BLACKWOOD
Artist’s Statement:
From my studio in Katoomba, I sculpt abstract forms in stone. I feel a strong motivation to reveal movement in the stones I choose, influenced by the dynamic lines that I see around me; lines of force, of growth, and of fluid movement.
My style is an evolution of the influences I absorbed while growing up in an artistic and architectural family. After focusing on fabricated stainless steel pieces while studying Jewellery and Object Design at Enmore Design Centre, I followed a curiosity to explore the reductive process of stone carving. The transition from stainless steel to stone has allowed me to expand my style to include more complex curves, lines, and organic shapes.
Clemente Meadmore, Burt Flugelman and Keizo Ushio, among others, have inspired my appreciation of form. Jane Valentine in Sydney, and the professional sculptors with whom I have worked in Canada and the United States have encouraged my confidence and the further development of my technical skills. My process continues to evolve with each piece.
