I have been sculpting for as long as I can remember. Even my first childhood memory is the creation of a snow woman, I can remember how it provoked the neighbors when I added the pine cones and needless. Schenectady, NY is not exactly the arts center of the universe and I knew even then that for me to make it as an artist I was going to have to be more conservative or find work elsewhere.
This was confirmed at my first large scale exhibit to the public, titled “Six Foot Column of Snow with Bits and pieces”, and how it was so brutally flattened by an angry Catskill farmer armed with a shovel and snow mobile. Not only in the winter were my sculptures destroyed, every summer in Maine, my sand sculptures were stepped on accidentally by angry women with scorned looks.
After a few years of college and a few poor jobs I knew the only way to get out of my situation was to enlist in the military. So I joined US NAVY "SEA BEES" as a civil engineer. My first duty station was NSA SOUDA BAY, CRETE, GREECE. My eyes and mind were finally opened to the history of Art, Architecture and Culture, which has influenced my work to this day.
During my stay in Greece I met my wife and a few years later I had the difficult choice of either going to the Gulf War with my battalion or coming to Sydney and live with my wife. Obviously I chose living in Sydney and have lived here ever since. In the last 20 years since living here I have studied as well as made several trips back to the States, Europe as well as the Middle East to educate myself in culture and study the history of art & sculpture. My style is probably most influenced by MINOAN sculpture which I studied in CRETE, as well as the style of HENRY MOORE. In my caricatures I tend to exaggerate the features that give them their individuality. In the last 8 years I have been busily raising a family (2 daughters) and my style has gotten more conservative for obvious reasons. My current large scale sandstone pieces would be considered Modern Contemporary. I use bold form and strong negative space in my work. I also like leaving the scars of the jack hammer, grinder or chisels that have been used to transform the block to the shape that it becomes.
In my most recent large scale sandstone commission for a sister city in Korea. I worked extensively with my client to achieve the desired outcome. By making several soft marquets we were able to work out what they wanted. If you or your company is looking to have a significant sandstone piece and want to work with someone that wants the same as you want, then I would be glad to assist you in any way possible.
I have been an award winning member of the Sculptor’s Society for the last 10 years and have been commissioned by Canterbury Council for an overseas project. Some of my work can be viewed on the Sculptor’s Society website or by contacting me for a viewing.
