JAN SHAW - Sculptor

Sandstone is in my blood -  I grew up near the sanstone cliffs of Rose Gully, Vaucluse, and spent my youth scrambling around the rocks and caves.  My father and grandfather owned the sandstone quarries in Epping, up to when I was born in 1939.  It is ironic therefore that my first love is sandstone.

When I carve I attempt to capture an emotion, but with no preconceived ideas.  I work into the block and when 'something' takes over I find my direction.  I am led by the stone itself.  The sculpture goes through stages; in the intermediate stage appearances can be deceiving.  I continue until the image unfolds and is revealed.  The process is really one of metamorphosis.

Jan studied Art at the Sculpture Centre, The Rocks, Sydney, with Mitzi McColl; she later taught sculpture at the centre for 3 years.  She has been a member of the Society of Sculptors since 1974, and of the Sculpture Guild.  Jan has completed major commissions for the Bicentennial Sculpture Park at Gallery 460, Gosford, and for a private patron in Western Australia, two Donnybrook stone carvings - 'Nanarup Dreaming' - (12 tonnes), and 'Earthly star Watcher (3 tonnes) in 1989.
